This two-day workshop will help photographers find a unique artistic approach and apply it to their work. Through a combination of case studies, shooting sessions and editing, participants will cover the following topics:
• choosing a perspective
• structuring a project
• finding the technical process that fits
• selecting and sequencing photographs
Award winning photographer Tomas van Houtryve is known his mastery of a remarkably wide range of photographic approaches, ranging from 19th century wet plate collodion to Augmented Reality to aerial drones to classic black-and-white reportage. For each new project, he finds a fresh approach that amplifies the core message of the work. Since 1999, van Houtryve has photographed in over 70 countries. Reoccurring themes include identity, ideology, memory, borders, surveillance and the relationship between the individual and the State. He is the winner of numerous honors, including the Roger Pic Award (2019), CatchLight / Pulitzer Fellowship (2017), ICP Infinity Award (2015), World Press Photo, Second Prize (2015), POY Photographer of the Year (2010), Bayeux Prize for War Correspondents (2006).
Workshop schedule
Tuesday, 2 July:
The morning session will start by reviewing each participants prints and giving individual feedback. Next, theory and case studies will be covered. At the end of the day, participants will be given individual shooting assignments.
Wednesday, 3 July:
The morning will be spent shooting assignments. Images will by edited and reviewed in the afternoon. The course ends at 5:30pm with final conclusions.
Participants should bring:
• 30 prints of their work (preferred formats from 15x10cm to A3)
• camera and memory cards

Cet atelier de deux jours aidera les photographes à trouver une approche artistique unique et à l’appliquer à leur travail.
À travers une combinaison d’études de cas, de séances photos et d’éditing, les participants aborderont les sujets suivants :
• choisir une perspective

• trouver le processus technique qui convient
• sélection et séquence de photographies
Le photographe primé Tomas van Houtryve est connu pour sa maîtrise d’un éventail remarquablement large d’approches photographiques, allant du collodion humide sur plaque de verre du XIXe siècle à la réalité augmentée, en passant par les drones aériens et les reportages classiques en noir et blanc. Pour chaque nouveau projet, il trouve une nouvelle approche qui amplifie le message central du travail. Depuis 1999, van Houtryve a photographié dans plus de 70 pays. Les thèmes récurrents incluent l’identité, l’idéologie, la mémoire, les frontières, la surveillance et les relations entre l’individu et l’État. Programme
Mardi 2 juillet :
La session du matin commencera par un examen des impressions de chaque participant et un retour d’informations individuel. Ensuite, la théorie et les études de cas seront abordées. En fin de la journée, les participants se verront attribuer des devoirs individuels.
Mercredi 3 juillet :
La matinée sera consacrée au séances photos. Les images seront éditées et relues dans l’après-midi. Le cours se termine à 17h30 avec les conclusions finales.
Matériel à apporter:
• 30 impressions de vos travaux (de préférence formats 15×10 cm à A3)
• appareil photo et cartes mémoires
